There's a large section of the population out there would have all of us write about nothing but cute widdle puppies and kittens. or worlds where everybody sings "We Are The World" all day long and never call each other niggers, spics, wops, kikes, chicken wings and so on. However that is not a world I want to read about in my popular fiction. I want to read about worlds that I might not necessarily want to live in but that I don't mind visiting from time to time.

I admire you for thinking so long and so deeply about such a subject because you obvious care about not offending anyone needlessly but I'm afraid that in these times that we live in that is Absolutely Impossible. But you also care about not torpedoing your book sales and that's real.

As you say in your article, most readers of this type of fiction expect and indeed even look for that type of language. Much as women of Female Porn (otherwise known as "Erotica") look for eight page descriptions of lovers longingly looking into each other eyes because then that justifies them reading the graphic sex scene following. See, it isn't "really" porn if the characters talk about their feelings before they git down on it.

By the same token, your characters cuss because of a variety of reasons and if you do your job as a writer and lay down the foundation of the world that your characters inhabit, people shouldn't have a problem with it. And if they do...well, the decision to moderate your language in your stories is your own and only you can make that call. And as long as it's a decision that doesn't keep you awake at night, then it's all good.

Dunno how much my ramblings have helped (I suspect they didn't) but I just wanted you to know that you're not the only who who wrestles with this kinda stuff.Derrick Fergusonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16781081269516018422noreply@blogger.com
